Email Setup
This article covers reading and sending email using email clients such as Apple mail, Outlook, Thunderbird, Postbox and webmail. For IMAP accounts we support simultaneous access from multiple devices and/or users. You should configure clients to use POP3 only if a mailbox is being read from a single device by a single user.
Configuring An Email Client
Webmail is configured by default to be compatible with any email client configured by following our guidelines. The goal for IMAP accounts is to have any mobile device or client see the same INBOX, Sent, Draft, and Trash folders.
Reading Email
For webmail simply log in with the userid and password for the mailbox. For email clients additionally the following information is required:
- incoming mail server
- outgoing mail server
- security and port settings
The incoming and outgoing server names were provided in the welcome email. We require SSL/TLS on all incoming and outgoing connections. Usually the client software will select the correct port numbers. In some cases the port numbers must be manually set. For IMAP the choices are
- Port 143 – this is the default IMAP non-encrypted port
- Port 993 – reading with SSL/TLS
For sending (SMTP):
- Port 25 – this is the default SMTP non-encrypted port
- Port 587 – is the preferred port over port 25 (most ISPs block port 25)
- Port 465 – this is the port used with SSL/TLS
Our servers will negotiate the correct settings in most cases. Some older versions or Outlook and mobile devices do not do this correctly. In this case you must configure your program manually.
